Manufacturer: Carl Hansen
Designer: Hans j Wegner 1954
Neckpiece designed specifically for Hans J. Wegner's CH78 Mama bear.
Affectionately known as the Mama Bear Chair, the CH78 Lounge Chair was originally introduced in 1954 as an extension of his compact CH71 Chair – two design antidotes to the often-heavy lounge chairs of the time.
In 2024, Carl Hansen & Søn celebrates the chair’s 70th anniversary by offering a new poetic upholstery colour palette, inspired by some Hans J. Wegner’s early water colouring sketches. The upholstery, Umber, is a soft, woolen upholstery informed by the shapes of geometry and the aesthetics of earthy brown pigment.
The Fabric: Umber is a sophisticated wool fabric designed by Luisa Allegri for Gabriel. Featuring a distinctive small squared pattern in brown mélange and lending its name from the earthy brown pigment umber, the brown melange is a defining feature, softening the geometric design, and creating a poetic water colour effect. The fabric’s soft aesthetic is enhanced by an organic, hand-crafted quality, creating a surface that brings comfort, calm and serenity to any space.
The 5-tone colour palette chosen for the CH78 Mama Bear Chair is inspired by Hans J. Wegner’s early watercolour sketches, particularly a decadent clover wallpaper pattern, made for a competition at the Royal Danish Academy where Wegner studied from 1936-1938.
