Manufacturer: Vitra

Designer: Jean Prouve, 1936

This is an original genuine Vitra piece.

Bookcases that attach to the wall were commonly found in interiors during the fi rst half of the 20th century. Jean Prouvé also designed a number of diff erent wall-mounted shelving units – such as the Rayonnage Mural produced by Vitra, which was originally conceived in 1936 for the École Nationale Professionelle in the French city of Metz.

The two vertical wall brackets of Rayonnage Mural are made of painted bent sheet metal. With their streamlined shape, reminiscent of the rudder of an aircraft or ship, they are a recurring element in Prouvé‘s designs. The wall brackets have precise horizontal slits into which the solid wood shelves are inserted. Together the two contrasting materials form a practical shelf that has the sculptural qualities of an aesthetic object.

The wooden shelves come in a choice of light or dark oak while the wall brackets are available in various original Prouvé colours.

Materials:

Wall brackets: bent sheet steel, powder- coated finish. Includes wall mounts in aluminium.

Shelves: solid natural oak with oiled finish or solid dark stained oak with clear protective
lacquer finish.
