Carl Hansen & Søn since 1908

Carl Hansen opened a small cabinetmaking workshop in Odense, on the Danish island of Funen, in 1908. More than a century later, Carl Hansen & Søn is still family owned, now run by the third generation under Knud Erik Hansen. Like Innes, it is a family business that thinks in decades rather than seasons.

The craft has not changed much either. Solid FSC-certified hardwoods, mortise-and-tenon joints, steam-bent rails and paper cord seats woven by hand, with indoor pieces still made in Denmark. Every piece is built to be used every day and passed on. That is why Carl Hansen furniture still looks right in a home fifty years after it was made. Hans J Wegner - CH24 & more

Hans J. Wegner and the Wishbone Chair

In 1949, Holger Hansen took a chance on a young designer called Hans J. Wegner. The pieces they made together became some of the best-known chairs in the world and Carl Hansen & Søn is now the largest maker of Wegner's furniture.

The CH24 Wishbone Chair, designed in 1949 and made since 1950, is the one most people know: a steam-bent top rail, a Y-shaped back and a seat woven from around 120 metres of paper cord. The CH07 Shell Chair, on its three curved legs, is a sculptural lounge piece. The CH25 Easy Chair is one of our favourite lounge chairs and has a double woven seat and back and the CH23 is a compact dining chair with a curved back rail, making it exceedingly comfortable and ideal as a dining chair for smaller spaces. Wegner is only part of the story. Carl Hansen & Søn works with the families and studios of other Danish masters and with new designers too.

Børge Mogensen brought a practical, honest style to his dining and lounge chairs. Ole Wanscher's OW149 Colonial Chair, designed in 1949, pairs a slim frame with a caned seat and back and loose cushions and is one of our most popular lounge chairs due to itshigh seating position making it easy to get in and out of, whilst still being a chair you can sit in for hours at a time. Morten Gøttler's MG501 Cuba Chair is a light folding chair in solid wood. The Austrian studio EOOS added the Embrace series, a softer, rounded take on the dining chair and lounge chair. These are incredibly comfortable and add a nice mixture of leather or fabric to the stunning natural wood frames. Together they make Carl Hansen one of the widest ranges of Danish design you can buy.

The range splits into three main sections. For dining, start with the Carl Hansen dining chairs, then pair them with a Carl Hansen dining table such as the CH327, with its visible joints, or the extendable CH337.

For the living room, the lounge chairs sit alongside the CH293 and Sideways sofas - each made to order in your choice of fabric or leather. Outside, Carl Hansen outdoor furniture is made in teak, which weathers to a soft silver grey if you leave it untreated. Is your Carl Hansen furniture genuine?

Yes. Innes is an authorised Carl Hansen & Søn dealer, so every piece we sell comes directly from Carl Hansen in Denmark. Genuine pieces carry the Carl Hansen & Søn brand mark and the CH24 Wishbone Chair has its own authentication mark.  We have visited the Carl Hansen factory in Denmark and meet up with Carl Hansen on a regular basis. Reproductions often copy the shape, but use cheaper wood, machine-woven cord and weaker joints. If a price looks too good to be true, it usually is.

How long does a Carl Hansen piece take to arrive?

It depends on the piece. In-stock pieces can ship straight away from our Uk warehouse and so be with you in a matter of days to around 12 weeks for made-to-order finishes. The CH24 Wishbone Chair and the CH25 Easy Chair are usually in stock in the most popular finishes. Some versions of the CH24, several tables and many outdoor pieces are on Carl Hansen's quick ship programme, at about 3 weeks. Most other pieces take 6 to 8 weeks,but can take up to 12 weeks. Which wood and finish should I choose for a Wishbone Chair?

For a light Scandinavian look choose soaped oak or beech, for warmth choose oiled oak or walnut, and for the least upkeep choose lacquer. Beech is pale and even. Oak has a stronger grain and is the most popular choice. Ash is light with a lively grain, and walnut is dark and rich. Soap gives a pale, matt, natural feel. Oil brings out the grain and slowly deepens in colour.  Our most popular finish is White Pigmented Oiled Oak as this finish keeps the wood light and prevents natural darkening and patination. Lacquer seals the wood and is easiest to wipe clean, but is not popular as you loose the lovely feel of the natural wood and any scratches need professional maintenance, whereas the soap and oiled finishes can easily be sanded by yoursself and re oiled or soaped. Painted finishes come in black, white and a range of colours. They do look stunning, but most client prefer the chairs in the natural wood finishes.

On the seats, Natural Paper Cord is much more popular than the Black Paper Cord, which can look stunning with darker woods such as walnut or mahogany. How do I look after paper cord and oiled or soaped wood?

Vacuum paper cord now and then. Blot spills straight away with absorbent kitchen roll or a barely damp cloth and re-treat oiled or soaped wood every few months. Paper cord is tough and lasts for decades with normal use. Never soak it or use strong cleaners. Carl Hansen also offer leather seat covers that can protect the paper cord.

Wipe soaped wood with a soap and water solution and refresh it more often in the first year. Oiled wood needs a thin coat of oil when it starts to look dry. Our Carl Hansen maintenance kits have everything you need, and our Carl Hansen care guides cover each finish in much more detail.
