The Vitra lighting collection brings together two distinct and legendary mid-century design philosophies — the organic, poetic Akari Light Sculptures by Isamu Noguchi and the technical, constructive works of Jean Prouvé.

Akari Light Sculptures — Isamu Noguchi

Conceived by Noguchi in 1951 following a visit to Gifu, Japan, the Akari series encompasses over 100 models — table, floor, ceiling and pendant lamps — each handcrafted using washi paper made from mulberry bark, stretched over a bamboo and steel wire frame. The paper shade transforms electric light into a soft, warm glow that is at once atmospheric and quietly sculptural. Available made to order.

Jean Prouvé 

Prouvé’s lighting stands in deliberate contrast to the Akari series. The Lampe de Bureau is a focused, minimal desk lamp in powder-coated sheet steel. The Potence is a pivoting wall light with a long swing arm — a piece as much about structure as illumination. The Abat-Jour Conique, a cone-shaped shade developed in 1947, was designed specifically to complement the Potence and Petite Potence wall lights. Available made to order.
