Your dining table may be in your kitchen, in an area of your living room or in a separate room altogether, but no matter where it is, or the space you have, the dining table is an important piece of furniture in a home. Whether you use it to start the day with breakfast or its the place where the whole family sits down to eat on an evening whilst sharing the days events, its a setting that brings people together - to celebrate, entertain, tell stories and enjoy time, together.
It may be an investment but we have put together some guidance and tips to help you select a table that is right for you and that you will enjoy for a very long time.
How to choose a dining table? From style preferences to practicality, size and proportions there are a few things to consider.
Think about the size of the space that you have, don’t go for the biggest table possible and overcrowd a room. An area can look more spacious with more visible floor space.
Do you need to fit any other pieces of furniture in the room, a side board for storage? Floor lamps or side tables for lighting? Don’t forget about leaving plenty of room to move chairs out and comfortably walk around the table. In small areas look for a narrow table and slim legs that don’t add on extra inches. Benches rather than chairs can also be a good option in narrow areas. Pedestal bases don’t block as much of the visible floor area giving the illusion of more space.
Extendable tables are a really good option for accommodating extra guests or for a special occasion when you may have extra dishes and crockery spread out on the table top.
We advise 60-80cms of table top space for each place setting to be comfortable and a minimum of 80-100cms of room from the table edge to the nearest wall or other object to allow for chairs to be moved in and out and to easily move around the table. The more space the better.
