HAY at 3 Days of Design, Copenhagen 2025

As expected, HAY had lots of exciting new furniture, lights and accessories. The main launch was the reintroduction of the Amanta sofa by Mario Bellini. We also saw some lovely new pieces by Julien Renault, Ana Kras and John Tree.

We arrived early for the most informative discussion with Marco Sammicheli and Rolf Hay about European design and how it evolved during the post war years. Rolf also spoke about how his interest in designer furniture started with Danish design legends Hans Wegner and Borge Bogensen and then moved onto Ray and Charles Eames's influence on mid-century design. He also explained how Cappellini, as an innovative manufacturer that really worked in depth with its designers, helped Rolf to create the culture and design process at HAY and its very special relationships with its designers.

We then had a private view of the new launches on the top floors of the HAY house. This is a great opportunity to not only view and try the new releases, but also chat to the designers who are able to give you great insights into the design process that they adopted. Julien Renault and John Tree were very generous with their time and we look forward to having their new releases on display in the gallery.

It was then a quick tour of the lower floors of the HAY house to see new and existing ranges. A great effort is made in their room styling and it is very inspiring to how they mix and match pieces together.

On the thursday evening there was HAY party at the Apollo bar in the stunning Nyhaven part of the city.

Layout Chairs & Compass Lights

Julien explained some of the key design features of his new range of dining and office chairs called Layout. The legs are top fixed and so are much stronger and all elements can be fully disassembled to extend its lifespan and enable refurbishment for long-term use. The upholstered version has removable covers - the back section is easily changed, but the base cover does needs to be professionally changed. The chairs come as armchairs initially and are available in recycled plastic, wood veneer and upholstered or a mix of all three. It comes with metal and wooden legs, as well as on spinning pedestal bases,  making Layout a versatile and durable seating solution ideal for offices, restaurants, public institutions, and domestic settings. . A side chair will follow soon.

The chair is a modern interpretation of a chair we love - Eero Saarinen's Executive chair. This has the open back to give the chair a lightness and openness whilst also improving comfort. It is made of minimum of 96% post-consumer recycled plastic and will come in a wide range of colours.

Julien also demonstrated his new Compass pendant and its adjustable version and went through a concept floor lamp version which will extend the range at some point in the future.

furniture design John tree with his new Annex table system for Hay at 3dd copenhagen 2025

John Tree - Furniture Designer

Annex Table System

John very clearly explained that the Annex was not just a table, but a very well thought out system of tables and desks that can adapt seamlessly to any situation or environment, be it a private home, office or public space.

Each table comprises of  a frame and tubular legs made from either solid oak or recycled aluminium (at least 75% recycled post-consumer scrap and extruded in Europe). Table tops can be linoleum, laminate, oak veneer or Kvadrat’s Really Textile Tabletop™ made from 70% end-of-life textiles.

With its considered material use, range of sizes, and optional integrated cable management, Annex is a practical and inviting choice for corporate, dining, and multifunctional spaces.

The tables are available in various shapes and sizes including: round, oblong, and flush. Sizes vary from a small 110cm round table up to a giant table over 5m long.

Designed with circularity in mind, allowing it to be disassembled, with all components replaceable and made from a high percentage of recycled materials.

The solidness of each table was great to experience, and John explained was due to the clever design of the extruded, recycled aluminium corners and frame. He even showed us a personal photo of 3 of the guys at the factory standing on top of one table to demonstrate its superior strength.

This is a table for someone wanting something beautifully designed and also really solid and built to last.
