Mario Bellini is an Italian architect and designer whose work spans architecture, furniture, and industrial design. Known for combining technical innovation with expressive form, Bellini has created some of the most recognisable pieces in contemporary Italian design. His work often explores materials, structure, and ergonomics, resulting in designs that are both sculptural and highly functional.
A brief history
Early Life & Education
Mario Bellini was born in Milan in 1935 and studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, graduating in 1959. Early in his career he began working in industrial design, gaining international recognition for his innovative approach to product development and his ability to merge engineering with design aesthetics.
Design Philosophy
Bellini’s work is characterised by a strong focus on materials, technology, and human interaction. He often explores how objects are used and experienced, creating designs that balance comfort, function, and visual impact. Many of his pieces combine soft forms with precise engineering, giving them both warmth and structural clarity.
B&B Italia — Modern Italian Design Excellence
Work with B&B Ittalia
Throughout his career, Bellini has collaborated with many of the world’s leading design brands, including B&B Italia. Among his most recognised furniture designs is the Camaleonda Sofa, a modular seating system celebrated for its flexibility, deep comfort, and distinctive tufted form. Among his most iconic works is the Le Bambole, originally introduced in 1972 for B&B Italia. The collection was revolutionary for its time, featuring soft, fully upholstered forms without visible internal structure. Its relaxed comfort and distinctive shape helped redefine modern seating design, and the series later received the prestigious Compasso d’Oro.
Flos - Italian lighting brand
Work with Flos
Alongside his furniture and architectural work, Mario Bellini has also collaborated with Flos, contributing designs that reflect his interest in sculptural form and the expressive potential of light. His lighting explores the relationship between object, space, and atmosphere, often combining strong geometric shapes with refined materials.
Among his notable designs is the Chiara Lamp, originally created in 1969. The lamp is formed from a folded sheet of stainless steel, creating a reflective interior surface that diffuses light in a soft and atmospheric way. With its elegant simplicity and innovative use of metal, Chiara demonstrates Bellini’s ability to transform industrial materials into refined design objects.
Bellini’s lighting for Flos reflects the same design principles found throughout his work: clarity of form, thoughtful construction, and an emphasis on how objects shape the experience of a space.
