String Furniture Inspiration
Few pieces of furniture are as quietly transformative as the String System. Designed by Nils Strinning in 1949, it has spent over seven decades proving that the best storage solutions are the ones that disappear into the room — holding everything you need without demanding attention. Here's how to make the most of it, room by room.
The Living Room
The living room is where the String System truly comes into its own. A full-wall configuration — mixing open shelves, closed cabinets and display space — creates a focal point that is both practical and beautiful. Use it to house books, ceramics, plants and a few carefully chosen objects. The key is restraint: leave some shelves open and uncluttered to let the system breathe. In a smaller living room, a single bay of String Pocket above a sofa or sideboard adds storage without weight.
The Home Office
String Works was designed specifically for the way people work today — a wall-mounted desk with shelving above and drawer units below, all within the same modular framework. The advantage over a freestanding desk is significant: everything is at the right height, nothing takes up floor space unnecessarily, and the whole setup can be reconfigured as your needs change. Add a pinboard or a few closed cabinets to keep the workspace clear and focused.
The Kitchen
Open shelving in the kitchen has never gone out of fashion — and the String System handles it beautifully. Use it for cookbooks, glassware, ceramics and everyday essentials. The wall-mounted design keeps worktops clear, and the modular nature means you can add shelves as your collection grows. A run of String above a kitchen counter, in white or oak, brings warmth and order to even the most utilitarian space.
The Bedroom
In the bedroom, String works best when it replaces the bedside table entirely — a narrow bay of shelving beside the bed, holding a lamp, books and a few personal objects, with a small cabinet below for discreet storage. It frees up floor space and gives the room a cleaner, more considered feel. For larger bedrooms, a full wardrobe configuration with hanging rails, shelves and drawers brings the same modular logic to clothing storage.
The Hallway
The hallway is often the most overlooked room in the house — and one of the most in need of good storage. A compact String configuration with hooks, a small shelf for keys and post, and a cabinet below for shoes transforms a narrow entrance into something that actually works. The String Pocket is particularly well suited here: small enough to fit almost anywhere, and available in colours that can complement or contrast with the wall behind it.
Outdoors
String Outdoor brings the same modular shelving logic to patios, balconies and gardens. Use it to store plant pots, gardening tools, outdoor tableware or simply as a display shelf for plants and lanterns. Built from weather-resistant materials, it holds its form and finish through the seasons — and looks just as considered outside as the String System does indoors.
Getting the most from the String system
The String System works on a simple principle: side panels fix to the wall, and shelves, cabinets and accessories slot in at any height using the panel's evenly spaced holes. This means you can start small — a single Pocket or a two-bay System — and add to it over time. Mix finishes for a more eclectic look, or keep everything in one colour for a clean, unified wall. The system is designed to last a lifetime and to change with you.

Laceby Manor Spa & Golf Resort
The stunning Laceby Manor Spa in North Lincolnshire has not only used String in their reception areas for displaying their lovely gift ranges, in their bar area for storing glasses etc, but also created a very clever wardrobe solution for their Spa bedrooms.
Spa Bedrooms
In order to create a luxurious contemporary feel to the rooms, and have adequate storage for clothes, a make up area, a work desk and a coffee station, the Spa used the String System to create a great storage solution. This looks just as good when empty as it does when full of items.
String Museum NM&.045 wall shelves were also used as bed side tables to complete the contemporary, clutter free Scandi look and help to ease cleaning of the rooms.
Spa Reception
Laceby Spa also used String System shelving in the main Spa areas. This includes 2 areas of shelving , used in the reception areas to merchandise the Spa accessories that clients can buy on their visits. They included shelves for display, drawers for storage and magazine racks.
A String System is also used in the bar / cafe area for glass and other accessory storage, continuing the modern feel throughout the building.
A mixture of Ash, Oak and Walnut wood veneers were used to add interest to the unit and make it less imposing and more zonable for product groupings.
