Manufacturer: Carl Hansen & Søn | Designer: Børge Mogensen, 1953
Configuration 1 is the most versatile entry point into the BM0253 system — combining open shelving with a veneered cabinet in a single, unified unit. It was designed by Børge Mogensen in 1953 as part of his ‘building furniture’ concept: storage that adapts to changing needs rather than dictating them. Carl Hansen & Søn brought it into production for the first time, faithful to Mogensen’s original vision of tubular steel uprights, FSC™-certified oak or walnut shelves, and a modular logic that lets each configuration stand on its own or grow over time.
Configuration 1 — Open Shelving With Cabinet
This configuration combines four open shelves with a single veneered-door cabinet — a practical balance of display and concealed storage in one unified unit. The cabinet sits within the steel frame on 20cm legs, lifting the whole system off the floor and giving it a lightness that belies its storage capacity. Four open shelves above provide generous display space, while the cabinet below keeps everyday items out of sight behind two veneered doors.
A considered starting point for the system — complete as it stands, and expandable if your needs change.
