A Chair That Stays

The CH25 is one of the first four chairs Hans J. Wegner created exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn, put into production in 1950 and in continuous production ever since - a testament to what happens when a designer gets everything right.

Wegner's choice of paper cord for the seat and backrest caused a stir when the chair was first introduced. The material - developed as a replacement for seagrass during World War II - had never been used in furniture before. Wegner saw its potential immediately: non-stretching, exceptionally durable, and with a woven texture that rewards close inspection from every angle.

Each seat and backrest is hand-woven by a skilled craftsman using a technique that resembles weaving, visible on both sides of the backrest. It takes approximately 10 hours and 400 metres of paper cord to complete a single chair. Here, that cord is black - giving the CH25 a sharper, more graphic character than the natural version, while the underlying quality and craftsmanship remain identical.
