Carl Hansen & Son Furniture & Lighting Collection

Manufacturer: Carl Hansen & Søn | Designer: Mogens Lassen, 1940

A Table With Ancient Origins

The ML10097 Egyptian Table was designed by Mogens Lassen after studying the folding stands discovered in Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 - objects that had survived three thousand years precisely because their design was so well resolved. Lassen first showed the table at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in 1940, and the connection to those ancient prototypes is immediately legible: a round veneer top on a solid wood base that collapses flat with the release of a small brass sliding latch beneath the tabletop.

Lassen and his contemporaries - strongly influenced by Kaare Klint - believed that the most enduring furniture began with the careful study of long-proven archetypes. The Egyptian Table is a direct expression of that conviction: a piece that earns its place not through novelty, but through the quiet authority of a form that has already stood the test of time.
