Fritz Hansen Table Series

The Fritz Hansen Table Series brings together four distinct table shapes — Superellipse™, Supercircular™, circular and rectangular — each built from the same considered set of design components. Conceived by Piet Hein, Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen in 1968, the series spans coffee tables, dining and meeting tables, and bar tables, making it one of the most versatile and enduring furniture families in modern design.

The Superellipse™ originated not as a table but as a geometric solution: Piet Hein's answer to the design of Sergels Torg in Stockholm, a public space that was neither square nor circular. The superellipse — a form that resolves the tension between the two — proved so naturally right that it became the foundation of the series. The Supercircular™, circular and rectangular models extend the same logic: resolved geometry, honest materials, no superfluous detail.

All tabletops are a 22mm laminated chipboard core, available in two finishes: Fenix laminate with a matt polished aluminium edge, or clear lacquered walnut veneer with a matching veneer edge. Bases are available as span legs in chromed or powder-coated steel, or a 4-star or 6-star pedestal on a satin polished aluminium foot with a satin chromed or chromed steel column, depending on the shape and size.

Designers

Piet Hein (1905–1996) — Philosopher, poet and mathematician, Piet Hein created the superellipse as a new geometric form for Sergels Torg in Stockholm. In collaboration with Bruno Mathsson, he later applied the shape to the table series that Fritz Hansen put into production in 1968.

Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) — Swedish designer and architect, Mathsson was an advocate of simplicity, beauty and elegance. His furniture was innovative in both technology and design, with production methods centred on the bending of laminated wood.

Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) — Jacobsen's collaboration with Fritz Hansen dates to 1934, with breakthroughs coming with the Ant™ in 1952 and the Series 7™ in 1955. One of the most productive architects and designers of the twentieth century, his work with Fritz Hansen remains a cornerstone of modern furniture history.

The Table Series pairs naturally with the iconic Series 7 chair — Arne Jacobsen’s stackable classic — or the sculptural Grand Prix chair for a more considered setting. Browse the full range of Fritz Hansen dining chairs.
