Manufacturer: Knoll | Designer: Harry Bertoia, 1952

Bertoia's First Design for Knoll

The bench was the first piece of furniture Harry Bertoia created for Knoll, introduced in 1952. It steps away from the wire grid of his better-known seating: a platform of solid wood slats rests on a welded steel rod base, an early exploration of the material that foreshadowed the collection to follow.

The slats are pre-treated to help prevent sagging and warping, and come in a black or white painted finish over a polished chrome base. Plastic glides on the sled base protect the floor beneath.

Long and low, the bench works as extra seating, an entryway perch or a low coffee table, and optional seat cushions are available on request.

Specifications

  • Dimensions: W183 × D48 × H39cm
  • Slats: solid wood in black or white painted finish, pre-treated to help prevent sagging and warping
  • Base: welded steel rods in polished chrome
  • Cushions: available on request
  • Glides: plastic glides on the sled base
  • Authentication: Knoll logo stamped into the base

Part of the Knoll Bertoia Collection, Benches and Furniture collections.
