A Sculpture Made of Air

Harry Bertoia's 1952 wire seating collection turned industrial metal rods into sculptural furniture, and the high-back armchair is its most enveloping form. Bertoia described the chairs as mainly made of air, like sculpture: the open frame lets space pass through, while the generous proportions hold the sitter in a relaxed position.

The frame is welded steel rod, finished in polished chrome, and the chair is supplied fully upholstered: full covers are stretched over the wire frame and attached with hooks. The high back and wide seat make it a comfortable lounge piece for living rooms, hotels and reception spaces, and it is available in a wide range of Knoll fabrics. Black or white Rilsan frame finishes are also available on request.
