Vitra HAL

The HAL family is Jasper Morrison's interpretation of the shell chair — a design tradition rooted in the work of Charles and Ray Eames, recast for contemporary use. Introduced by Vitra in 2010, HAL has grown into one of the most versatile seating families in the Vitra catalogue, with a single shell form available across an extensive range of bases, materials, and configurations.

The collection spans dining chairs, armchairs, stackable chairs, counter and bar stools, and lounge seating. Shell options include plywood (HAL Ply), recycled polypropylene (HAL RE), and upholstered fabric (HAL Soft) — each available across multiple base types, from four-legged tube and wood bases to cantilever, sledge, and swivel office bases. The HAL Lounge Chair and Ottoman, introduced in 2021, extend the family into relaxed residential and hospitality settings.

Throughout, the HAL family maintains a consistent aesthetic: understated, considered, and quietly functional. Chairs can be mixed across shell types and bases within the same space, making HAL as well suited to a restaurant or meeting room as it is to a home dining room or study.
