Working closely with the Eames family, Vitra honours the legacy of Charles and Ray Eames and continues to develop their iconic designs as new needs and opportunities arise.
Reimagined for 2025
Vitra Eames Collection 2025
For 2025, Vitra has carefully reworked the Eames Collection to meet the needs of contemporary living while staying true to the timeless spirit of Charles and Ray Eames. With a focus on sustainability, craftsmanship, and modern versatility, the collection continues to evolve — ensuring its relevance for generations to come.
The iconic Eames colour palette has been respectfully updated. Vitra introduces new powder-coated finishes for the Aluminium and Soft Pad Groups in dark bordeaux and chalk— inspired by the original Eames tones aubergine and parchment. These new hues offer expanded configuration options for both classic and contemporary interiors.
Vitra now uses European-sourced wood and updated surface treatments across key pieces in the collection, including: Eames Lounge Chair, Eames Elephant in Plywood, Eames Stools, Occasional Tables LTR, Hang it All and the Eames House Bird. This update reflects Vitra’s strong commitment to the longevity and sustainability of its products.
The Eames Lounge Chair has been further refined using insights from decades of production experience. Small but meaningful improvements ensure this design icon continues to offer lasting quality and comfort.
Vitra continues to evolve the collection in line with environmental goals and modern lifestyles. Recent innovations include: Eames Plastic Shell Chairs made from recycled household plastic, Introduction of Eames Counter and Bar Stools, Return of the Eames Fibreglass Shell Chairs. A growing range of Eames Accessories. The latest addition to the collection is the Eames & Vitra Hard Back Book — a celebration of the enduring partnership and shared design philosophy that continues to shape contemporary living.
The Eames Lounge Chair, introduced in 1956, stands as one of the most iconic and enduring symbols of mid-century modern design. Created by Charles and Ray Eames, the chair was conceived as a modern reinterpretation of the classic English club chair—blending traditional elegance with the sleek minimalism and functionalist ideals of modernist design.
As the Eameses’ first piece aimed at the high-end market, the Lounge Chair quickly became a benchmark of modern luxury. Its design is instantly recognisable for its seamless integration of style and comfort. The chair features a reclined posture and comes paired with a matching ottoman, both upholstered in premium leather or fabric.
The structural foundation consists of three curved moulded plywood shells: one each for the headrest, backrest, and seat. For 2025, these shells are finished in veneers primarily sourced from Europe—including Cherry, Chestnut, and Walnut—treated with sustainable, water-based lacquers. The exception is the Santos Palisander (rosewood) veneer, which is sourced from outside Europe to preserve its authentic grain and character.
While the chair’s outer form is refined and sculptural, the interior provides deep, inviting comfort—making it as pleasant to sit in as it is beautiful to behold. The Eames Lounge Chair remains a masterclass in balance: between art and engineering, classic and contemporary, luxury and practicality.
The Aluminium Chair is one of the greatest furniture designs of the twentieth century. Charles and Ray Eames conceived and developed this chair in 1958 for the private residence of an art collector in Columbus, Indiana (USA). For its construction, the designer couple departed from the principle of the seat shell, instead stretching a panel of fabric or leather between two aluminium side members to create a taut but elastic seat. The chair adapts to the body of the sitter and is exceedingly comfortable, even without elaborate upholstery. The Aluminium Group includes several different models for use in homes, offices and public areas. Thanks to this wide range of models, a variety of aluminium bases with a polished, chrome-plated or powder-coated finish, and a large selection of colours for fabric or leather upholstery, the perfect Aluminium Chair can be found for every environment. Vitra has produced Aluminium Group chairs in the same superior quality for decades. This outstanding quality allows us to offer a 30-year warranty* on all the chairs in the Aluminium Group.
The design of the Soft Pad Group dates from the year 1969. In terms of both construction and shape, the Soft Pad Chairs are similar to the design of the Aluminium Group. However, their sewn-on cushions create a striking contrast to the slender aluminium profiles. The Soft Pad Chairs are softer and more voluptuous than the chairs in the Aluminium Group, but without losing the clean clarity of their common silhouette. The chairs adapt to the body of the sitter and provide extraordinary comfort. The Soft Pad Group is a comprehensive family of chairs suited for use in the home and office, as well as in public spaces: the EA 205/207/208 models offer luxuriously soft seating for upscale meeting and conference settings, while EA 222/223 is an exceptionally comfortable lounge chair and ottoman combination. Mounted on a swivel base and available with backrests in various heights, the EA 217/219 chairs complete the product group. Thanks to this wide range of models, a variety of base options and a choice of fabric or leather upholstery in many different colours, customers can find the perfect Soft Pad Chair for every interior.
For 2025, new lacquer finishes have been added to add a contemporary twist to these design classics.
New colours and materials have been added in late 2025 in order to keep the collection relevant, appealing and sustainable. Chestnut that is European sourced has been added to the dark Walnut previously available on the Eames Wooden Stools and the LTR side tables. Hang it All have new warm and cool colours and the Elephants are now made in recycled household plastic and are available in new colours. The wooden version is now made from Walnut and Chestnut (both sourced from Europe) and like all the wooden pieces, the finishing is now in a water-based lacquer that is more environmentally friendly and has a more contemporary duller appearance. Eames House Whale also has this new lacquer, but is otherwise unchanged.
Explore the history of designers Charles and Ray Eames. Often referred to as a twentieth-century interpretation of the nineteenth-century English club chair, this seating instantly became a symbol of comfort. The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is one of the most significant designs of the 20th century.
