A Lounge Chair Fifty Years in the Making
The CH22 Lounge Chair was the first model in Hans J. Wegner’s debut collection for Carl Hansen & Søn — a series that also gave the world the CH24 Wishbone Chair and the CH25 Lounge Chair. Designed in 1950 and manufactured at Carl Hansen’s family workshop, the CH22 went out of production for several decades before being reissued in 2016, faithful to Wegner’s original technical drawings.
At first glance, the chair is defined by its large, distinctive wooden back with visible cover caps. Look closer and the signature Wegner details emerge: the arm support embraces the side stretcher and seat frame before expanding to full width beneath the armrest for optimum support; the paper cord seat is led down around the seat frame and through a horizontal groove in the back rail; and the front legs — now made to match the profile of the back legs, exactly as Wegner originally drew them — are brought up through the seat frame and locked with wedges. The hand-assembled front corners complete the picture.
Although production has been modernised, the CH22 is still made using the same principles of craftsmanship Wegner himself oversaw in 1950. The result is a chair that rewards close attention — a lounge chair of genuine depth, both in its making and its history.
Craftsmanship & Finish
Available in solid oak and walnut with a natural paper cord seat. Armrest and backrest always match the frame finish. The oak/walnut combination pairs an oak frame and cover caps with a walnut armrest and backrest. Also available in lacquered finish — contact us for more information.
