A Mid-Century Icon of Comfort and Craft

Charles Eames described the brief simply: an updated version of the English club chair. What followed was years of development — the result was a chair that was lighter, more elegant, and more comfortable than anything that had come before it. The 1956 launch set a new standard. The Lounge Chair was the first armchair to feature a swivel base, and its combination of moulded plywood shells, shock-mounted cushions, and considered proportions made it an immediate icon. It has remained in continuous production ever since.

Vitra has refined the Lounge Chair over decades of production — updating the veneer composition for sustainability, switching to water-based varnishes, and sourcing all wood except palisander from Europe. There are now six veneer options for the shells. All covers — fabric and leather — are removable for cleaning or replacement, and every element can be freely combined: shells, cushion covers, and base finish. The result is over 2,000 possible configurations.

Cushions: polyurethane foam with removable covers
Armrests: padded with polyurethane foam, removable covers, attached to shells with shock mounts (bonded rubber and metal connectors)
Base: five-star swivel base (Lounge Chair) or four-star non-swivel base (Ottoman); die-cast aluminium throughout
Seat height: 380mm (250mm under load, measured to EN 1335-1:2000)
Glides: hard glides for carpet fitted as standard; felt glides available for hard floors

Upholstery Grades

Fabric F100 — Nubia — A blended fabric with a lively, natural appearance. Its fine substructure is interspersed with voluminous bouclé yarn, giving the fabric depth and a soft, inviting touch. Varying yarn combinations yield either contrasting or calm colour compositions with a distinctly Mediterranean flair. Available in 11 colours.
Fabric F160 — Calma — Made from 100% natural fibres, Calma’s dense, velvety virgin wool pile changes tone with the light, giving the fabric depth and a natural sheen. Soft and supple to the touch, yet hard-wearing, easy to clean and shape-retaining. Available in 6 colours.
Leather L50 — Leather Premium F — Relatively smooth cowhide with a flat grain and fine top sheen. Dyed-through and lightly pigmented, tanned with an agent extracted from olive tree leaves. Available in 22 colours.
Leather L60 — Leather Natural — Very soft cowhide with an untreated grain. Porous and breathable, it acquires a lively patina through use. Tanned with olive leaf extract; chemicals used are harmless and applied in minimal amounts. Available in 4 colours. Recommended for residential use.

Seat & Back Shell Veneers

Cherry Natural — Fine-pored texture and uniform grain with a golden yellow to reddish hue that deepens into warm reddish brown with age. Sourced in Central Europe.
Chestnut Natural — Prominent growth rings with an open grain and honey-coloured tone that deepens into a light golden reddish-brown over time. Sourced in Central Europe.
Chestnut Black — Black lacquer finish that retains the warmth of the natural chestnut grain. Pairs well with dark leather and fabric colours.
Walnut Natural — Subtle grain with slightly lighter colour and more pronounced grey tones than American walnut. European black walnut sourced from Southeast and Central Europe.
Walnut Dark — Refined, understated elegance with an even grain. A more subdued alternative to palisander.
Santos Palisander — Lively grain pattern integral to the original Eames design and still considered the classic version. FSC-certified forests in Bolivia.

Base Options

Polished / Sides Black — Polished aluminium with black-painted sides. The classic Eames base finish.
Polished Aluminium — Fully polished die-cast aluminium.
Black Powder-Coated Aluminium — Matte black powder-coat finish throughout.
