Recline Without Compromise
The Grand Relax is a reclining lounge chair designed by Antonio Citterio for Vitra in 2019. It is compact for what it offers — a concealed integrated mechanism that absorbs the user’s weight as they sit, moving the chair into a reclined position without any manual adjustment. The seat and backrest move independently in synchronised motion. A control knob adjusts the resistance of the mechanism; the backrest can be locked at any angle. The chair rotates 360° on a four-star aluminium base.
The seat and back cushions are loose, sitting on the chair frame rather than being fixed to it. The seat cushion is a chamber cushion filled with polyurethane foam lozenges and ball fibres. The back and neck cushions use a mix of polyurethane foam cubes, goose feathers and down — firm enough to hold their shape, soft enough to envelop the user. The back shell, the understructure of the seat, and the adjustment knob are covered in split leather Leather Forte, which also defines the outer contour of the chair. The base finish — polished or powder-coated aluminium — determines the finish of all other metal parts.
