Manufacturer: Fritz Hansen | Designer: Arne Jacobsen, 1958

Shaped by Hand, Unchanged for Decades

Arne Jacobsen developed the Egg™ by hand - shaping wire and plaster models in his garage - until the shell achieved its characteristic enveloping curve. Designed in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, where Jacobsen controlled every detail of the building and its interiors, the Egg™ has remained in continuous production by Fritz Hansen ever since, unchanged in form.

The high, organic shell creates a sense of enclosure and calm - a space within a space - making it equally suited to a private living room or a considered contract interior. The shell has an adjustable tilt fitting that can be calibrated to the weight of the individual user.

Specifications

  • Dimensions: W86 × D79/95 × H104cm (seat height 37cm, armrest height 58cm)
  • Shell: hard moulded inner foam shell padded with softer foam structure; back covered with 100g tricot wadding before upholstering; adjustable tilt fitting calibrated to user weight
  • Base: four-star aluminium base with a steel column. Powder-coated finishes in Silver Grey, Warm Graphite, Brown Bronze or Black have a matching powder-coated column; the satin-brushed aluminium version has a satin-chromed steel column
  • Glides: black polyamide leg ferrules
  • Upholstery: fully upholstered in a wide range of textiles and leathers

A matching Egg™ Footstool is available in the same base and upholstery options. Part of the Fritz Hansen Lounge Chairs and Lounge Chairs collections at Innes.

  • W86 × D79–95 × H104cm (seat height 37cm, armrest height 58cm).

Arne Jacobsen

Design visionary and creator of the Egg™, Swan™, Series 7™ and Drop™ chairs, among other iconic furniture pieces.

It is said that as a child growing up in Copenhagen, Arne Jacobsen painted over the Victorian wallpaper in his bedroom. But young Arne did not cover his walls with typical childish drawings or paint the ornate wallpaper boyish blue. Instead, he decided to paint his room entirely white. His decision may seem commonplace today, but in the early twentieth century white walls were not yet in fashion. From the very beginning, Arne Jacobsen was ahead of his time.
