Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ lamp family in 1957 as part of his total design concept for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen — a project in which he controlled everything from the building’s architecture to its cutlery. The AJ Floor, Table, Mini Table, and Wall lamps were placed throughout the hotel at its inauguration in 1960, each sharing the same clean geometric silhouette: straight lines, a tilting shade, and a white-painted inner surface that directs a soft, even downlight. The family has remained in continuous production ever since, and is widely considered Jacobsen’s most recognised lighting design.
The AJ Royal Pendant was designed for the hotel’s dining room; the AJ 50 Wall Light for its entrance, and carries an IP65 rating that makes it just as relevant on a contemporary façade. The AJ Oxford Table Lamp came in 1963, designed for St Catherine’s College, Oxford — another Jacobsen building. Each piece shares the same restraint and precision, and each has earned its place in continuous production.
