Arne Jacobsen designed this fixture, among many other features, for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, in 1957. Characterized by the open grooves at the top of the shade, the pendant emits a diffused light upwards thus creating a pleasant ambience. The white painted inner shade design ensures a soft glare-free downward light.
The AJ Royal pendant were found in an attractive copper version above the tables in the snack bar behind the atrium at the hotel as well as in the 1st floor lounge and in the Panorama lounge on the 21st floor, where they ensured perfect atmospheric lighting. In 1960, the SAS Royal Hotel was the tallest building in Denmark, and the country’s only skyscraper with its 22 floors in all and a height of 69,6 metres.
Together with the AJ lamp family, the AJ Royal was part of the overall design concept, which Jacobsen created for the hotel. He practically designed everything himself. The pendant’s partially globe-shaped design from 1957 is thought to part of the beginning of Jacobsen’s journey towards the classic, geometric shapes typical of the future designs from the world-renowned Danish architect.
AJ Royal is state-of-the-art. Hemispherical fixture housing. Soft uplight emitted through stepped ring louvres moulded to fit the shape of the fixture.
The pendant comes in two sizes and is characterised by the ridges on top that allow a gentle light to exude upwards. The new, energy-saving LED version all sizes come with a diffusor, which offers a smoother, 100% glare-free lighting.
