An Icon of the Modern Movement

Designed for the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exhibition in Barcelona, the Barcelona Chair is one of the most recognised objects of the last century. Mies van der Rohe's approach was architectural rather than sculptural: the crisscross chrome frame, the hand-welted leather cushions, the belting straps, every element resolved with the same precision he brought to the buildings he designed around them. The canted seat holds the sitter in a relaxed yet supported position, and the chair reads as well empty as it does occupied.
