Manufacturer: Knoll | Designer: Warren Platner, 1966
Decorative, Gentle, Graceful
Warren Platner came to furniture design via Eero Saarinen's office, where the pedestal had already redefined what a table base could be. Platner saw a different opportunity: not to eliminate the leg, but to multiply it — hundreds of curved vertical steel rods welded to circular frames, creating a form that was at once structural and sculptural. Where modernism had been austere, Platner wanted something that was “complementary to the person sitting in it” — decorative and graceful without resorting to applied ornament.
Introduced in 1966, the Platner Collection captured a shift in the modern vocabulary that was already underway. The coffee table carries the same wire construction as the chairs and side table, available in bright nickel, 18k gold plate or bronze metallic paint, with a choice of glass or marble top.
The Polished Nickel base with clear glass top is available in four weeks via the Knoll Quickship programme — see the Platner Coffee Table Quickship page.
