From the Radiohuset to Your Home
The VL45 Radiohus Pendant began life in the 1940s as part of Vilhelm Lauritzen's total design vision for the Radiohuset building in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen - a landmark of Scandinavian modernism in which Lauritzen controlled everything from the architecture to the light fittings. Designed in close collaboration with Louis Poulsen, the Radiohus Pendant became one of the most quietly coveted pieces in Danish design history, sought after at auction and antique markets for decades before Louis Poulsen reissued it under the VL45 name.
Its appeal is straightforward: a mouth-blown opal glass shade on an untreated brushed brass fitting, producing soft, uniform, diffused light with a gentle downward emphasis through the open base. Nothing superfluous. Nothing that dates.
Sizes, Colours & the Brass
The VL45 is available in three sizes - 175, 250, and 370 - and four glass colours: Opal White, Amber, Pale Yellow, and Pale Rose. The 370 is available in Opal White only. Each size works differently in a space: the 175 suits a bedside or reading context, the 250 works well over a kitchen island or in a cluster, and the 370 makes a considered statement above a dining table used alone or in a pair.
The brass fitting is untreated and will develop a natural patina over time - moving through uneven dark spots and markings before settling into a rich, deep golden tone. This is expected and intentional, not a defect. The patination process may have already begun at the point of delivery.
