Decorative, Gentle, Graceful

Warren Platner came to furniture design via Eero Saarinen's office, where the pedestal had already redefined what a table base could be. Platner saw a different opportunity: not to eliminate the leg, but to multiply it. Hundreds of curved vertical steel rods are welded to circular frames, creating a form that is at once structural and sculptural. Where modernism had been austere, Platner wanted something that was “complementary to the person sitting in it”: decorative and graceful without resorting to applied ornament.
