Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Hella Jongerius, 2005/2015
The name comes from the Dutch word for low-lying land reclaimed from the sea — and the Polder Sofa wears it well. Designed by Hella Jongerius, it has the flat, horizontal emphasis of that landscape: a long, low-slung body with an asymmetrical structure that makes it as comfortable to lie across as to sit on. One end has a low integrated armrest; the other opens onto a platform that doubles as a surface for books, a tray, or a drink. The ottoman is separate and freely movable, usable as a footstool independently of the sofa.
The upholstery is one of the Polder’s most considered details. Rather than standard contract fabrics, Jongerius developed textiles exclusively for Vitra — coordinated combinations of colours and weaves across the seat, back and body cushions. The four available mixes (The Antarctic Blues, The Earth Reds, The Pebble Greys, The Sea Greens) each bring a different character to the piece. Buttons in wood or horn fasten the removable covers; colour and grain vary naturally between pieces.
The sofa is available with the higher armrest on the left or right. Note: left and right refer to the perspective when viewing the sofa from the front.
